A former teacher at Mt Pleasant’s Renaissance Public School Academy filed a federal lawsuit saying the school violated her right to free speech and discriminated against her for her race. Mika Yamamoto was fired from teaching her 5th grade class in the days following her lecture about domestic violence and discrimination against women. Yamamoto also claims Renaissance Principal Lisa Bergman told her the community wasn’t ready for her. Principal Bergman says the school cannot comment on the lawsuit at this time, but that they’re proud of their history of non-discrimination.
