The Mt Pleasant Oilers survived some costly turnovers and penalties to pick up a 28-0 win over Saginaw Friday night at Community Memorial Stadium. The Oilers struck first blood early when Jerry Parra connected with Jaden Perry for a touchdown on the first drive of the ballgame. From there, both teams showed off their rushing attacks, but failed to reach the end zone. The Oilers came close to scoring two more time in the first half, but both drives ended on fumbles by tailback Darren Bergman.

Bergman redeemed himself early in the third quarter, punching in the Oilers second touchdown of the night from the goal line. The joy was short-lived, however, when Mt Pleasant quarterback Jerry Parra went down on the next possession.

Parra returned early in the 4th quarter, and quickly proceeded to punch another Oiler touchdown into the end zone. Then Parra shined one more time late in the 4th quarter. He connected with Bailey Mitchell on a 4th and long for the final score of the game. Mt Pleasant moves to 1-2 on the season with the win.

Mt Pleasant’s defense gave the Saginaw offense fits throughout the night. The Trojans failed to break off more than a handful of big runs. Then the Oilers absolutely shut down any hope for a Saginaw passing game.

Jerry Parra showed his dual-threat capability all game long throwing for three touchdowns, and rushing for 119 yards from the quarterback position. Defensively, Parra also picked up a huge interception in the first quarter. For his efforts, Parra earned our JNR Engraving Player of the Game honors.

The Oilers hit the road again next week to play rival Midland at Midland Community Stadium. Mt Pleasant fell to Midland last season. The Oilers also lost to Midland Dow in the same stadium just two week ago.

Saginaw fell to 1-2 on the season. The Trojans return home next week to host Bay City Western.

We follow the Oilers next week to Midland for the rivalry game against the Chemics. Coverage begins at 6:45PM Friday on My 1043.
