Dr. Oz is the latest guest host of “Jeopardy!” His two-week run started yesterday, but not everyone is happy about the pick… and they’re making themselves heard. In an open letter, former “Jeopardy!” contestants urge the show to rethink the decision to have Dr. Oz host the fact-based game show, calling the pick a “slap in the face to all involved.”
More than 500 former “Jeopardy!” contestants have signed the letter accusing Dr. Oz of unresearched and potentially “dangerous” medical claims in his career as an on-screen medical expert. Their take is that his hosting gig would celebrate the “elevation of talking heads at the expense of academic rigor and consensus.”
“Throughout his nearly two decades on television he has used his authority as a doctor to push harmful ideas onto the American public, in stark contrast with his oath to first do no harm,” the letter reads. “These ideas include promoting supplements that do nothing, legitimizing gay conversion therapy (which is banned in California, as well as 19 other states), dangerous ‘cures’ for autism, and, most recently, the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19.”
