It’s week five of ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” and last night the celebs and their pros brought it back to the 80s with their routines. And they went all in – we’re talking side ponytails, bodysuits, even more unfortunate hairstyles, the works.
Of course, Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli were in house to judge and score the performances, along with new host Tyra Banks. Last week, Anne Heche was sent home – and as you may recall, not that happy about it – and last night an actor was sent home. Here’s what happened:
- First up was Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, kicking things off with a rare jazz routine – in full neon jazzercise gear – to “Maniac” by Michael Sembello. Justina looked totally into it, and there was a lot of energy on the floor… but the judges were left wanting more from the actual choreography. The two kicked off the night with a high score of 24.
- Next up was Jesse Metcalfe and his pro Sharna Burgess. They did the Tango to “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”… and oh my gosh, Jesse’s hair and white suit combo. The judges were as thrilled with their fashion sense as they were with the routine, although they noted the duo has improved each week. They scored a 19.
- Then Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savcheko matched Jesse and Sharna’s 19 with their Cha-Cha to “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” by New Kids On The Block. The judges love Chrishell’s enthusiasm, but the moves just aren’t there yet.
- Jeannie Mai and Brandon Armstrong were up next, delivering another solid routine that earned them a 24 – although the judges think it might be time for Jeannie to step up her moves, since she’s been doing so well.
- Monica Aldama and Val Chmerkovskiy brought a whole new mood with their Tango to “Tained Love” by Soft Cell – and you should have seen Val’s mullet! They earned a new high score with their impressive routine that showcased Monica’s flexibility, although the judges had a few technical notes. The two scored a 26.
- AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke were up next with a Waltz to “Open Arms” by Journey. The judges were stunned by AJ’s “elegance,” so it looks like he’s really starting to prove himself as a dancing competitor. The judges gave them a score of 24.
- Skai Jackson and Alan Bersten got another 24 with their Jazz routine to “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News – and the routine was all “Back To The Future” themed.
- Next up was Vernon Davis and Peta Murgatroyd – and while their glam outfits and heavy-metal set lit up the ballroom… they didn’t get the scores to match due to their stiff moves. The judges gave the two a 21.
- But the Kaitly Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev earned another high score with their Tango to “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany. They dressed up as two nerds in love, which was adorable, and earned themselves a 27.
- But that wasn’t the highest score of the night – that honor went to Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart. They earned almost a perfect score, a 29, with their contemporary routine to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler – what a way to deliver the first contemporary routine of the season!
- They saved the best – or worse, depending on your taste in hair and fashion – for last. Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson did a very fast Quickstep to A-Ha’s “Take On Me.” Nev had the biggest smile on his face the whole time… and the brightest holographic pants we’ve ever seen. The two earned themselves a 26.
Then it was time to send home another dancing celeb. Vernon and Jesse were in jeopardy, but Vernon and his pro Peta were saved by all three judges. That meant it was Jesse Metcalfe being sent home, along with his pro Sharna Burgess.
“Dancing With The Stars” airs on Monday nights at 8pm ET on ABC.
