Leonardo DiCaprio has hit back at Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for accusing him of “giving money to set the Amazon on fire.” To recap, Bolsonaro took issue with the Oscar-winner and longtime environmental activist’s organization Earth Alliance pledging $5-million to local Brazilian groups fighting the wildfires. With no other evidence, the Brazilian president accused DiCaprio of being part of an international “campaign against Brazil” over his alleged ties to a non-profit that’s being accused of “setting fire to the Amazon.”
“They are an amazing, moving and humbling example of the commitment and passion needed to save the environment,” DiCaprio writes. “The future of these irreplaceable ecosystems is at stake and I am proud to stand with the groups protecting them. While worthy of support, we did not fund the organizations targeted.”
