Robyn Crawford has finally broken her silence about her relationship with Whitney Houston. Much to the surprise of no one, she admits that she and the late legend had a physical relationship.
In A Song for You: My Life with Whitney Houston, Robyn wrote that she and Whitney met at a summer camp in East Orange, New Jersey in 1980 where they were both counselors. Whitney was 16 and she was 19. It started with a kiss that eventually led to more. She says it wasn’t planned – it just happened.
Other tidbits:
- Whitney ended their physical relationship early on – right after she signed her record deal with Clive Davis – by giving Robyn a Bible in 1982. “She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore,” Robyn said. “She said if people find out about us, they could use this against us…Back in the ‘80s, that’s how it felt.” Robyn reacted by keeping their love under wraps. “I kept it safe,” she said. “I found comfort in my silence.”
- Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston, said that it “wasn’t natural” for two women to be as close as her and Robyn were. “But we werethat close,” Robyn noted. “We never talked about labels like lesbian or gay. We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever.”
- Robyn wrote this book “to lift her legacy, give her respect and share the story of who she was before the fame, and in that, to embrace our friendship.”
