- John Singleton suffered a stroke earlier this month.
- His mother, Sheila Ward, claims he’s in a coma and wants to be appointed his conservator so she can handle his affairs.
- His 19-year-old daughter, Cleopatra Singleton, disputes her claims of him being in a coma and doesn’t want her grandmother to handle his affairs.
Is John Singleton really in a coma? Depends on who you ask. We told you that his mother, Sheila Ward, had filed paperwork to be his conservator so she could handle his affairs. According to her, the stroke he suffered earlier this month has left him “unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
Now the 51-year-old’s daughter is coming forward to dispute Ward’s claims. Cleopatra Singleton says her father isn’t in a coma. “He is only medically sedated to keep his blood pressure low and [to] allow the vessels in his brain to heal,” she said in a declaration filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court. “My dad is progressing every day…my father is breathing on his own.”
The way Cleopatra sees it, Sheila is misrepresenting his condition to bolster her case toward conservatorship. A form from a doctor at Singleton’s hospital filed with the court by Ward’s lawyer says the director is incapacitated and can’t make his own decisions, but it doesn’t address whether he’s in a coma.
- The 19-year-old is opposed to her grandmother having the role. She’d rather see it go to another family member – either her grandfather or John’s oldest son. In the paperwork, she says that Ward – who’s been John’s personal and business manager since the beginning of his film career – has mismanaged his affairs and abused the position, especially when it comes to the support of his children. “Sadly, my father [has] allowed his mother to stay in that position out of fear and obligation to her,” the document reads. Even though Ward asked the court to immediately appoint her conservator because essential financial moves must be made by the end of the month or her son will suffer significant losses, Cleopatra’s opposition will make an immediate decision unlikely and could point to an extended court battle.
