The Michigan State Police Grants and Community Services Division and Lapeer Post partnered with Special Olympics Michigan, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, Lapeer Police Department and the Lapeer County Intermediate School District to implement a new day-long program called Sunny Day Camp that brings together police officers and students with disabilities for a day of fun and mentorship. Troopers and officers spent the day interacting with students, participating in activities that included inflatables, lunch, police displays, a dunk tank, first aid simulation activity/training, a Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring lesson called “Get Ready Get Safe,” a dance party with shaved ice and a graduation ceremony.
