Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis has passed away at 89. Her brother Apollo shared the sad news on Facebook, confirming she died in New York City on Saturday morning “after many months of failing health.”

Dukakis is best known for her Oscar-winning role in “Moonstruck,” starring alongside Cher as her on-screen mother. Born in Massachusetts to Greek immigrant parents, she rose to stardom with her role in “Steel Magnolias,” and was also a drama teacher at New York University for more than 15 years

Hollywood is paying tribute to Dukakis on social media, including her co-star Cher. “Olympia Dukakis Was an Amazing Academy Award Winning Actress,” Cher writes on Twitter. “She Would Tell Me How MUCH She Loved [Broadway veteran] Louis [Zorich], Her ‘Handsome Talented,Husband.’ I Talked To Her 3 [weeks] Ago. Rip Dear One.”
