Some companies just don’t get that Americans will jump at the change to slam a bad move.
A Halloween costume based on the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale is the latest to cause fury. Online retailer Yandy was selling what it calls the Brave Red Maiden costume. It includes a red cape, white bonnet, and red mini dress. The “sexy” outfit is only part of what set off the outrage. It was the tie-in to a series about single women forced to bear children in an oppressive, male-dominated future society.
One critic tweeted sarcastically, “nothing like a sexy rape victim for Halloween fun.” The outrage built up enough that Yandy has now pulled the costume from its website. The Phoenix-based company posted an apology in place of the link to the costume.
