Bill Murray, actor, comedian, and now Mark Twain Award winner. The Kennedy Center announced on Monday that Murray will receive the award on October 23rd. The ceremony will be broadcast at a later date. In my opinion Murray definitely deserves this award.
Murray is a comedy veteran, starting Saturday Night Live where he portrayed characters like the lounge singer and one of the famous Bees. To movies like “Caddyshack,” “Ghostbusters,” “Groundhog Day,” great films and amazing characters. His deadpan acting style in “Groundhog Day” gets me every time. Carl Spackler in “Caddyshack” is another classic character and proves Murray’s humor and acting chops. He can play a deadpan character and as well as a goofy one.
Another gem is the film “Stripes” a favorite of mine Murray portrays a man who is fed up after losing his, job, home and girlfriend decides to join the army and shenanigans occur. Flanked with other amazing comedy actors like John Candy and Harold Ramis, Murray shines in this great film. If you have time, a Bill Murray movie marathon will brighten any day.
Murray is now in amazing company as a Mark Twain Award recipient. Other winners include big names like, Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Carol Burnett, Tina Fey, and Jay Leno. Good company for sure. I think it is about time Bill Murray wins this award; he has been a fixture in pop culture since the late 70’s and has portrayed unforgettable characters.
Murray is very happy to accept the award and in a quote to the New York Times said, “I’m honored by this award and by its timing. I believe Mark Twain has rolled over in his grave so much for so long, that this news won’t disturb his peace.” Great quote and one you would come to expect from a great comedian.
