A large fire engulfed a small warehouse on Walnut Street near downtown Mt Pleasant on Wednesday night. The Mt Pleasant Fire Department, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Fire Department, Shepherd Tri-Township Fire Department, Mobile Medical Rescue, and the Mt Pleasant Police Department all battled late into the evening to control the blaze and keep the fire from spreading to nearby trees and buildings.

According to an officer at the scene, firefighters were called around 6:45pm to the scene. As smoke began to rise, crowds began to gather on Broadway Street and nearby walking and biking trails to catch a glimpse of the scene. At times, traffic was bottlenecked as passersby slowed to check out the fire and, in some cases, snap a picture.

Building owner David McGuire was notified by the fire. The building was said to be filled with furniture and paint products, but officials were unable to confirm. Neighbor Tammy Chamberlain said that just before the fire she saw a group of kids around the age of 11 running away from the building. Police on the scene say that this is only a rumor for now.

We have received no word of injuries at this time. Several rumors have surfaced of nearby evacuations, but we are unable to confirm the rumors at this time. This is a developing story, and we will keep you posted as more details emerge.
