After slumping throughout the first 6 weeks of the season, Miguel Cabrera proved once again that he’s back on track, clubbing two home runs to lift the Detroit Tigers 5-4 over the Philadelphia Phillies Monday night at Comerica Park. Cabrera also was named co-American League player of the week on Monday, along with teammate Cameron Maybin, who is hitting .600 since returning from the disabled list a little over a week ago. Tigers pitcher Mike Pelfrey remains winless in his last 17 starts after surrendering four runs in six innings last night.
There’s more good news for the Tigers. MRI results revealed that Jordan Zimmermann has a Grade 1 strain of his right groin, and will likely only miss one start and avoid the disabled list. Zimmermann left Sunday’s game with the strain, and it was feared he would miss up to six weeks. With an off day on Thursday, the Tigers will be able to skip Zimmermann’s start without having to call up an emergency starter.
