A veterinary tranquilizer has been identified in at least 3 overdose deaths in Michigan since March, triggering a warning from state health officials. The 3 deaths were reported in Ingham, Berrien and Wayne counties. The linked drug, Medetomidine, is not approved for use in people and can cause nervous system depression and death. Adverse effects include slowed heart rate, low blood pressure, and decreases in brain and spinal cord activity.
