Whether it was week one or week four; high school football happened last Friday and seems to have gone very well! So let’s gear up for another week of high school football on 923WMMI and My1043.net! If you joined us last Friday the Clare Pioneers turned five defensive TD’s into a 45 to 0 victory of the Shepherd Bluejays. Our other “ultra local” schools were all victorious. Mt Pleasant over Bay City Western, Beal City over Evart, and Sacred Heart dusted Carsonville Port Sanilac on Saturday in eight man action. This week we turn our attention to the Beal City Aggies as they are at home vs longtime conference foe Leroy Pine River!
As we know (or should know) the Aggies went on a once in a lifetime run to the MHSAA finals last year before falling to Reading at Ford Field. Their 27-14 victory of Ishpeming and their 21-20 victory over Ubly are games that I will never forget calling as they were drama filled from start to end with the Aggies coming out on top in hard fought battles on the gridiron. Ahhh the memories, but this Aggie team wants to make some new memories, and things got off to a good start this past Friday as Beal City went to the county fairgrounds in Evart to best the wildcats in a game they trailed at the half.
This week it’s an even tougher challenge as Leroy Pine River comes to town. If you’ve been in the Highland conference with Beal City as long as Leroy Pine River has; this is the game, the regular season superbowl you could call it. I actually will not go broadcast a game in Pine River because of the language that can bleed over the air. Let’s just say they always want to beat Beal City really bad. However, it doesn’t happen often in 54 matchups between these interconference rivals Beal is 45-9, a solid .833 winning percentage. The kids at Pine River may not know that though, and this year well it’s a bit different, anything can happen.
The Aggies do return a load of talent from last year: TJ Maxon, Benny Matthews, and Aiden Mindel, and a host of junior contributors to the state runner up are all back for their senior year, and Wade Wilson, Matt Oswald, and Peyton Sellers were all standout sophomores for the Aggies should be back for their junior year campaigns. Hopefully that playoff run can have a lasting impact as many teams were not able to have their normal offseason training. It may have been a long time ago but bringing those JV players up for that playoff run could be big down the road for Beal City.
After getting by Evart 26-20, the Aggies may have their work cut out for them Friday night as Leroy Pine Rive opened its season with a 42-20 victory over Manton, but there may be more than meets the eye with this score. Last year Manton was 0-9, so this was the football programs tenth straight loss. What I’m getting at is..That 42-20 score may not be all that impressive, but we will find out Friday night. AS they say…That’s why they play the game, and lets all be happy and grateful that game is being played!!!
