When asked about whether he thought the two were romantically linked, Mark Saltzman, who joined the show as a writer in 1984, says yes… at least, in his mind. “I always felt that without a huge agenda,” he notes. “When I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them.”

It’s worth mentioning, however, that he admittedly linked Bert and Ernie’s supposed relationship to his own love life, with acclaimed film editor Arnold Glassman, who he was already with when he started at “Sesame Street.” “That’s what I had in my life, a Bert and Ernie relationship,” he adds. “I will say that I would ever had said to the head writer, ‘Oh, I’m writing this, this is my partner and me.’”
