You can now add “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” to the list of animated shows that will be recasting characters of color with actual people of color.
“Moving forward, ‘The Simpsons’ will no longer have White actors voice non-White characters,” Fox said in a statement. And Mike Henry tweeted that he was walking away from the role of Cleveland Brown on “Family Guy” after 20 years “I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Alison Brie says that she regrets voicing the Vietnamese American character of Diane Nguyen in Netflix’s “Bojack Horseman.” After watching other voice actors step down from roles, she said, “I now understand that people of color should always voice people of color. We missed a great opportunity to represent the Vietnamese American community accurately and respectfully, and for that I am truly sorry. I applaud all those who stepped away from their voiceover roles in recent days. I have learned a lot from them.”
