There’s a petition going around calling for M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 thriller “Split” to be removed from Netflix. The hashtag #GetSplitOffNetflix is trending as the Twitterverse bashes the movie for misrepresenting the mental condition Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder.
“Split,” serving as a sequel of 2000’s “Unbreakable,” follows James McAvoy as a man with 24 split personalities Those in support of the campaign to kick “Split” off Netflix are saying that the film is at risk of doing “significant harm” to sufferers of the mental disorder, referred to sometimes as “plural people,” by “demonizing” their disorder “for entertainment.”
“This movie literally implies that people with DID are ‘monsters,’” writes on user. “And it completely stigmatizes an already heavily stigmatized mental illness. This is just wack and ableist.”
