A cow and her calf are breathing easier, thanks to Joaquin Phoenix. The newly minted Oscar winner made it a point to practice what he preaches about loving the animals.

Joaquin visited a slaughterhouse run by Manning Beef in Pico Rivera, California right after the Academy Awards to speak with Anthony DiMaria, the president and CEO of the company. While they didn’t see eye-to-eye on the nature of the industry, they found enough common ground to allow Joaquin and LA Animal Save liberate the cow and her calf.

Now mama Liberty and baby Indigo will be able to live out the remainder of their lives at a Farm Sanctuary in northern Los Angeles County. They’re the fifth set of bovines saved.
