Senator Al Franken won’t make much of an appearance in tonight’s tribute to David Letterman after several edits. The longtime light-night TV host is being honored on “David Letterman: The Mark Twain Prize” on PBS. The ceremony was taped at the Kennedy Center last month and Franken participated, but PBS says in a statement the Minnesota Democrat will not appear substantially in the program. The statement went on to say they didn’t want anything to distract from the celebration of American humor.
As we told you, Franken has been under fire since last week when a Los Angeles radio anchor accused him of sexual harassment during a USO tour in 2006. Franken was working as a comedian at the time. He has apologized.
Letterman is the 20th recipient of the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Recent honorees include Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Ellen DeGeneres, Carol Burnett, Jay Leno, Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray.
