The Gratiot County Republican Party sent a letter to the city of Alma asking city officials not to declare itself a “Welcoming City.” The Welcoming America nonprofit organization is a coalition of municipalities that focus on inclusion. The letter says that organizations like Welcoming America are connected to a political viewpoint hidden by “inclusive language,” and states that “any attempt to bring people into our community who are not willing to assimilate into our culture should be resisted.”
