Poor penalty killing proved costly for the Detroit Red Wings as they fell 6-4 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in their NHL season opener Thursday in Tampa. The Red Wings were issued two penalties in the third period for too many men on the ice. Overall, the Wings were shorthanded six times, allowing three power-play goals for the Lightning. Thomas Vanek led Detroit with two goals on the night.
