Tom Hanks admits he passed on the role of Mr. Rogers at first.

The actor told “Today” he credits the director of the film, Marielle Heller, for convincing him to star in “A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood.” “She told me that she was not interested in any kind of editorial comment on who Mister Rogers was nor did she want an imitation of Mister Rogers’ physicality or presentation.”

He added “she said essentially you will get a wig and we’ll do something with your eyebrows and all the rest is gonna be up to you.” The movie is a look at children’s TV hero Fred Rogers. It opens Friday.
