Science is a wonderful thing; it can help us find the answer to almost any question we may have. One of the major questions we want answered is how can we cure a certain disease? Well a group of scientists may have found the answer for one of the worst diseases around, HIV.

I came across an article by Lulu Chang about how scientists at Temple University, removed HIV genes from rat and mice DNA. This is an amazing discovery and achievement. It means we are that much closer to finding a cure for this terrible disease.

The folks at Temple hope that they will be able to now try this method on larger animals. If that is successful they think they may be able to have a clinical trial for human patients within the next several years.

Science is doing wonderful things every day to help cure terrible diseases like HIV. With this Temple study coming to fruition let’s hope this method is also useful in combating cancer. With all of the technology out there cures for these big diseases are hopefully coming soon.

The most interesting part of this to me is that the scientists were able to alter the DNA of the rats and mice. If you can alter DNA you can alter almost anything you want on that animal. DNA is the building block of who you are. It tells whether you are male or female, your eye color, hair color and more. The fact that these scientists were able to change the DNA of these animals and remove a certain disease from it could be a medical breakthrough.

If you can alter DNA parents in the future may be able to pick the sex of their baby, what hair, and eye color it has other traits they choose. Not only can they do that but they can take out the genes of a certain disease as well if this study works on larger animals and humans.

Science is awesome and interesting but also somewhat frightening. What will it do next? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
